Thailand has some amazing food and lately I have decided to break free from the familiar Thai dishes that I have been eating and start to explore more into the Thai Cuisine and the restaurant Khao Soi Lam Duan was first on my list. One dish I have always had interest is called Khao Soi which is Burmese influenced dish that is quite popular in Northern Laos and Northern Thailand. The main ingredients of the dish are hand cut rice or egg noodles, a curry soup base and coconut milk. It is also quite popular to add Chicken, Pork or Beef as well or Khao Soi Gai (chicken), Khao Soi Muu (pork) and Khao Soi Nuura (beef) and they even have a spare ribs version.

I decided to do some research here in Chiang Mai and located a popular place that is more for the Thailand people but of course foreigners are more than welcome. Restaurants in Thailand that focus on serving Thai food to Westerners are never as good in my opinion as they often lack authenticity and usually are less spicy for instance to appease the foreign individual that is having Thai food for the first time.

I am not saying all the restaurants aimed at Westerners are like this but certainly a lot of them happen to be. If you really want true Thai food I believe going to the places where the Thai people frequent is best. One bonus of eating how the Thai people eat is the price is usually much cheaper which a bonus is if you are on a budget. You certainly can have some wonderful Thai dishes and not have to break the bank once you get a handle on where to go.

After some searching on the Internet on places like Trip Advisor, forums and just basic general searching on Google I decided on Khao Soi Lam Duan to try the dish for the first time. It had high ratings for being delicious, was not in the tourist area and is known for being quite busy with the local Thai people. So grabbing my GPS, my motorbike and my lovely Thai girlfriend I was on my way. I enjoy taking my girlfriend to places like this for two reasons. One, she usually enjoys the Thai food much more at popular local Thai restaurants and two she would tell me if it was terrible and did not taste like the real thing.

Amazing Cheap Thai Food

We arrived in the area and my GPS was telling me it was close but we could not find it. Drove down a few side streets and went back and forth until finally deciding to ask a worker outside of a local hotel where the restaurant was. Funny thing was he looked at us like we were crazy and then pointed to an establishment directly across the street. I must say it is not always easy to find these little shops or restaurant in Thailand but usually a local will be more than happy to show you the way. We parked just to the left of the establishment and went inside.

Khao Soi Lam Duan is a nice little restaurant with very friendly staff that greeted us at the entrance as we went inside. If you are expecting some high class restaurant when you enter, well you are not going to get that. However, the restaurant was very pleasant inside. It was well laid out, clean, had fans to keep you cool and lots of interesting Thai paintings, artwork, photographers and more decorating the walls. A staff member greeted us with the menu and waited for our decision. I already knew why I was here, to try the Khao Soi Gai (Chicken) and also ordered a Lemon Tea.

My girlfriend ordered a pork dish called Khao Kaa Muu. The prices are extremely cheap here and I got the large version of the dish. I was very happy that I decided to try Khao Soi Gai. The dish really is pretty basic, you got your noodles, your soup curry, coconut and a chicken leg is dropped right in the middle. You also have some other ingredients that you can sprinkle in as you desire such as onions, lime and some sort of pickled ingredient.

My girlfriend regretted ordering her dish after she tried mine. Not because it was not delicious, in fact she enjoyed it very much but because she really liked mine and thought it was an excellent version of Khao Soi. In fact since the first time we went we have been back two more times and have enjoyed it each time. Sometimes it was a little more spicy than the last and you can actually feel the outsides of your lips burning just a little bit at least we both felt that way.

Khao Soi Lam Duan Menu Drinks

Getting a good drink to go with it is certainly recommended and if you like a really sweet drink then try Nam Lam Yai or Longan juice, this drink was amazingly sweet, like drinking liquid honey, just fantastic! I really do love everything about Khao Soi. The sweetness of the curry, the bit of spice, the wonderful noodles and the moist chicken make a great treat. When all was said and done we got the price for our meal. For two of us with two dishes and two drinks it only costs 150 Baht in total which is less than 5 dollars American. Surely, if a similar meal was presented at one of the more Tourist Thai Restaurants it would probably costs you up to 5 times as much and also not taste like the real thing.

I have nothing but good things to say about Khao Soi Lam Duan. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean and inviting. If you are up for trying a traditional Northern Thai dish the way the Thai people enjoy it than I suggest you check it out. Just keep in mind that Khao Soi is often a day time meal and restaurants of this type usually close a little early. I believe Khao Soi Lam Duan closes at 5pm or perhaps a bit earlier if it is not busy.

I know we showed up at 4:30pm one day and it was closed. We talked to the owners the next time and they say they usually close between 4pm and 5pm so make the place a lunch trip or afternoon snack. It is not a heavy dish and will certainly warm you up with the curry and spices and keep you moving until a later meal. Of course there are other options to enjoy as well on the menu but I do hope I convinced you to at least try Khao Soi on your first visit, both my girlfriend and I high recommend it.
